O'Neil was a student in high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performance. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. It was a shock to the judges and they advised that people choose Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the best singing abilities. After giving consistently stellar performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil's performance on the 7th of September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
